Question:

The points (7, 2) and (- 1, 0) lie on a line

(1) 7y = 3x - 7 (2) 4y = x + 1

(3) y = 7x + 7 (4) x = 4y + 1

Solution:

The given points are (7, 2) and (- 1, 0).

Then the slope of the straight line passing through these points is

m = (0 - 2) / (- 1 - 7) = (- 2)/(- 8) = 1/4

the equation of the required straight line is

(y - 0) = 1/4 * {x - (- 1)}

or, y = 1/4 * (x + 1)

or, 4y = x + 1

option (2). 4y = x + 1 is correct.

Rule:

The equation of a straight line passing through the points (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂) is given by

y - y₁ = m (x - x₁)

where m = slope of the line = (y₂ - y₁)/(x₂ - x₁)
