The polynomials x3 + 2x2 - 5ax – 8 and x3 + ax2 -12x -6 when divided by
(x - 2) and (x + 1) leave remainders p and q respectively. If q - p = 8, find the
value of a.

Answer:

1.If x-2 is g(x), x=2.

p(2)=x³+2x²-5ax-8=p

(2)³+2(2)²-5(2)a-8=p

8+8-10a-8=p

8-10a=p----(1)

2.If x+1 is g(x), x=-1.

p(-1)=x³+ax²-12x-6=q

(-1)³+(-1)²a-12(-1)-6=q

-1+a+12-6=q

a+5=q-----(2)

Now,q-p=8

so, (2)-(1)=8

a+5-(8-10a)=8

a+5-8+10a=8

11a=8+3=11

a=1.

Hope helps u.
