The ponds and lakes which have luxuriant growth of vegetation, have polluted water that causes the death of the aquatic animals living in it why is it so even when plants produce oxygen to support animal life?

the aquatic plants cover the surface of the water not letting the sunlight getting into the water ,and the plants consume the O2 in the water . example-algae

because the water is polluted and the polluted water is acidic and full of carbon dioxide
