Theory on population was first propounded by Thomas Robert Malthus (1766 - 1834), a renowned British political economist.

In his theory, popularly known as the Malthusian Theory, he states the reasons for fluctuations in human population on earth. His famous work is titled 'An Essay on the Principle of Population'.

His argument was that if population was left to grow without control, it will outgrow resources needed for its sustenance. Else disease caused by natural calamities, war etc. will take over and decimate the population.
