The population of a place in a particular year increased by 15 %. next year it decreased by 15%. find the net increase or decrease per cent in the initial population.

We start with a population - let's call that P.

It increases by 15%, so that is:

1.15 P

And now it decreases by 15% - we can do that by saying the population is now 85% of what it was:

0.85 ( 1.15 ) P = .9775P

This means the population is lower than it started with and is lower by:

1 − 0.9775 = 0.0225%
