Method - 1:

Let the population of the town a year ago = 'x'.

Given that it increases by 8%. Its present population is 142560.

= > x + 8% of x = 142560

= > x + (8x/100) = 142560

= > 100x + 8x = 142560 * 100

= > 108x = 14256000

= > x = 14256000/108

= > x = 132000.

Therefore, population of the town a year ago = 132000.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method - 2:

= > 108% = 142560

= > 1% = 1320

= > 100% = 132000.

Therefore, population of the town a year ago = 132000.

Hope it helps!
