Let the population of the town a ago be 'x' years.

Given that the population of a town increases by 8%.

= > x + 8%.

Given that present population is 54000.

= > x + 8% of x = 54000

= > x + (8/100) * x = 54000

= > x + 0.08x = 54000

= > x(1 + 0.08) = 54000

= > x(1.08) = 54000

= > x = 50000.

Therefore, the population of the town 1 year ago = 50000.

Hope this helps!
