Answer:

The population of the town = 6000

Let no. of males be “M” and no. of females be “F”.

Thus,

M + F = 6000

F = 6000 – M …….. (i)

Now, M increases by 5% and F increases by 9% and the population after the increase becomes 6500. Thus, we can write

1.05M + 1.09F = 6500

Putting the eq. (i), we get

⇒ 1.05 M + 1.09(6000 – M) = 6500

⇒ 1.05 M + 6540 – 1.09 M = 6500

⇒ 0.04 M = 40

M = 40 / 0.04 = 1000

Hence, the no. of males in the town is 1000.
