The total population of the town was 40000

Increase percent = 5%

In 1997 ,

5/100 x 40000 = 2000

So the total population is

40000 + 2000 = 42000

In 1998 ,

5/100 x 42000 = 2100

Total population = 42000 +2100

                              = 44100

In 1999 ,

5/100 x 44100 =2205

Total population = 44100 +2205

                            = 46305

In 2000 ,

5/100 x 46305 = 2315 .15

                         = 2315 (approx.)

Total population = 46305 + 2315

                            = 48620
