When calculating indexes in statistics, you assign a base of 100 to the reference number and get the percentage of the number to be compared.

Therefore in this case; The index of population for Umtata compared to Queenstown

Queenstone is the base = 100 % , we then calculate index population of Umtata as

12238300 (Umtata ) = 100%

∴ 4146580 = 100 × 4146580/12238300

= 33.882%

Therefore the index of population for Umtata compared to Queenstown is 33.882%
