The standards of beauty are widely affected by the popular culture of any country.

Explanation:

  • These standards are set by certain social media sensations and famous celebrities or actors.

  • These standards have many downsides as they make a person conscious of their appearance. It makes them feel inferior as well as reminds them of their financial status if they are unable to buy the latest trend.

  • One of the major examples of this is the supremacy of fair complexion in our societies which needs to be eliminated.

It’s true that popular culture is the fathometer of the standards of beauty in any country. The various negative and positive aspects are discussed below.

Negative Aspects:

• The beauty standards of a female differs from society to society. The common beauty standards of a country are set by the advertising agency of the beauty products which is not a justice to all the females.

Every woman is special in her own way. The society shackle when a female wanted to do things in her own way.

• The fashion industry is growing rapidly and so does its impact. The label of fairer skin is considered as beautiful.

• The popularity of any beauty brand impacts the beauty standard of the whole country. We as society as a whole have given reigns in the hands of media.

• The accelerating growth of foreign beauty products and their unrealistic advertisement demoralizing many women in our country.

• The society is supporting such popularity thus those who cannot afford to buy are suffering from inferiority complex and also leads to depression.

The beauty standards are directly related to the prevalent popular culture of any society. During olden days simplicity was considered as highest beauty standards. But with the advent of westernization and foreign trading, the people are mesmerized with their pomp and show. The foreign traders have introduced beauty shows for the advertisement of their products which are sold at an exorbitant rate in our country.

There are some positive aspects too-

• If the popular culture set up a trend to follow what is ethical and good for society, the majority of people will start following the same.

• The advertisement by popular celebrity also impacts people’s mind up to a great extent.

• The draping of saree by our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has inspired many ladies of that time.

• Society needs to understand the difference between good & bad culture.

The movie actresses, fashion models, political icons and female leaders can help to ascertain the beauty standards of a country.

The beauty standard should not be directly proportional to popularity. Instead, society should focus on women intelligence and popularize the same. This will boost the confidence level of all the women’s of different strata of society. The IPS officer Kiran Bedi is an ideal example of female empowerment. The society as a whole should try to eliminate the myth that fairer skin is the best skin. The known famous quotation says – “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. The beauty should comprise of intelligence, behaviour and many other personal aspects. In any country media in the form of journal, movie, social media, advertisement impacts the majority of the society.

If the fashion & beauty trend emphasizes on the upliftment of women in the society then the women will not be demoralized or insulted on the grounds of financial status or external beauty. The beauty pageants have set up the standard of the ideal woman as slim, fair and intelligent. But society comprises of women’s of different shapes and sizes. Thus affecting each and every woman with a guilty conscience.

Instead, beauty pageants and advertisement should talk about their problems and solutions. The media reaches the vast audience of the country thus can communicate in a better way and can set such beauty standards which are harmless to all.
