If you connect batteries with opposing polarities (i.e +- -+ or -+ ++-) then the voltages try to cancel each other out (V1-V2).
1st case :
If the batteries are of the same potential then the output voltage would be zero;
2nd case :
or if they have different voltages, the higher V would dominate the flow of charge.
