The potential difference between the plates of a cell is 1.9 V in the open circuit. On connecting this cell to a resistance of 3 ohm, the potential difference between its plates becomes 1.5 V. Giving the circuit diagram, find the internal resistance of the cell and the current flowing through the resistance of 3 ohm.

Answer:

EMF  = 1.9V

pd supplied to resistor = 1.9 - 1.5V = 0.4V

I across resistor = V/R

I = 0.4/3

I =  0.1333

Internal resistance r of the cell:

EMF = I(r + R)

1.9 = 0.1333(r + 3)

1.7667r = 0.1333*3

r = 0.2263
