The power factor of any practical choke coil is nearly zero. In the ideal case, the value of the power factor is exactly 0.

Power Factor :

  • The power factor i.e. PF is the ratio of Working power to the Apparent power
  • Working power is measured in kiloWatts i.e. kW
  • Apparent power is the measure of the amount of power used to run machinery and equipment and thus it is measured in kVA.
  • Apparent power is calculated as the product of the Potential difference i.e. V and the electric current i.e. I.
  • The value of the power factor varies from the 0 to 1 range.

The formula of the Power Factor as required here is :

PF = W / (V*I)

PF = cosx  where x is the phase angle between V and I

For a choke coil, the phase angle "x" between the Potential V and current I is 90 degrees in the ideal case i.e. a good choke coil

So,   Power Factor for the Choke coil  = cos(x)

                                                               = cos(90)

                                                               = 0 ( approx )

Hence, the power factor of an ideal Choke coil is zero. In practice, it is nearly and approaching zero.
