Given:

The power of the water pump, P = 8 kW = 8000 W

Time taken, t = 1 minute = 60 seconds

Height, h = 15 m

To find:

The amount of water the pump can raise in 1 minute to a height of 15 m.

Solution:

Formula to be used:

\boxed{Work\:=\:Weight\:\times\:Height\:=\:mgh} \\\\\boxed{Power\:=\:\frac{Work}{Time } }

From the above two formula, we get

\bold{P \:=\:\frac{mgh}{t}}

where

P = Power

m = mass

g = acceleration due to gravity

h = height/distance

t = time taken

Now, we will substitute the values of P, g, h, & t in the above formula,

8000\:=\:\frac{m\:\times\:10\:\times\:15}{60}

m \:=\:\frac{8000\:\times\:60\:}{10\:\times\:15}

m \:=\:\frac{480000}{150}

m\:=\:3200\:kg

1 kg = 1 litre

m \:=\bold{\:3200\:L}

Thus, the amount of water, the pump can raise in 1 minute to a height of 15 metre is3200 L.

Explanation:

Given The power of water pump is 8 kw. The amount of water it can raise in 1 minute to a height of 15 metre is

  • Given power p = 8 k w and g = 10 m / s^2
  • Now we have work done = potential energy
  •                         Or w = mgh
  •                                 = m x 10 x 15
  •                                  = 150 m joule
  • Now we have power P = w / t
  •                             8 x 10^3 = 150 m / 60 (since t = 1 min)
  •                            48 x 10^3 / 15 = m
  •               Or m = 48 x 1000 / 15
  •                Or m = 3200 kg
  • So the amount of water it can raise will be 3200 kg
