The prairies have a small population because the condition like temperature food and water its not good that means the basic things needed in a life there where is unavailable are available in very less quantity so people do not wanted to live there as the population of prairies is less. Also the production is very less in prairies.

Answer:

The prairies have a small population. This is because, the basic conditions for survival in the prairies is not suitable, because the water available, the weather conditions that prevail in the prairies are unfavourable to lead a good life. Also, the production in these lands are insufficient and hence food availability is also not up to the standard. As the prairies cannot provide for the basic amenities, one requires to sustain life, the prairies have a small population.
