The presence of the Himalayas in the North is of great significance in determining the form and amount of precipitation over the Indian subcontinent. The high altitude, length and direction of the Himalayas helps to intercept the summer monsoons which come from the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea and cause precipitation. They do not allow the cold continental air masses of Central Asia to enter India. If there were no Himalayas there would not have been any precipitation over India and the country would have been a desert. The winters would have been excessively cold because of the cold air masses coming from Central Asia.

Latest meteorological studies show that the Himalayas split the jet stream into two branches which in turn play and an important role in bringing monsoons in India.
