let father's age be y

and son's age be x

then y=x^2

also

y-1=8(x-1)

y=8x-7

using the above result in the first equation

8x-7=x^2

x^2-8x+7=0

x^2-7x-x+7=0

x(x-7)-1(x-7)=0

(x-1)(x-7)=0

x=1 or x=7

x=1 isn't possible or else the son would had never been born.

the present age of son is 7 and that of father is 49
