let present age of son be x father's age be y

y=3x (1)

also,

y-5 = 5(x-5)

y = 5x-25+5= 5x - 20 (2)

From 1 and 2

5x-20=3x

5x-3x= 20

2x=20

x = 10

y = 3x = 3(10) = 30

Therefore son's age is 10 years and father's age is 30 years
