Let the age of the son be x.

Let the age of Father be y

Given that father's age is three times that of son ,

ie Father’s age y=3x…..,(1)

Given that eight years ago, father's age was 5 times that of son,

Father's age y-8 was 5 times that of son (x -8)

ie y-8 = 5(x-8 )

y -8 =5x-40

y =5x-40+8

= 5x -32…..(2)

substituting the value of y from the eqn (1) we get,

3x = 5x-32

3x -5x =-32

-2x =-32

x=16.

Therefore present age of son is 16 years.

Similarly by substituting the value of x in the eqn(1) we get the present age of father.

ie y= 3×16 =48.
