Given:

The ratio of the age of Andy and Mike = 5 : 3

To find:

The present age of Andy and Mike.

Solution:

Let us take an age to be x.

Therefore, the ratio of the ages of Andy and Mike becomes 5 x : 3 x

If Andy had been seven years older, then

Age of Andy would have been =  5 x + 7

If Mike had been seven years younger, then,

Age of Mike would have been = 3 x - 7

Hence, the ratio of ages of Andy and Mike now becomes 3 : 1

\frac{5 x + 7}{3 x - 7 } = \frac{3}{1}

Solving the above equation, we get,

x= 7

The present age of Andy = 5 x = 35 years

The  present age of Mike = 3 x = 21 years
