let the age of andy be 5x and that of mike is 3x
now if andy had bee 7 year older age of andy will be 5x+7
and if mike had been 7 year younger his age would have been 3x -7
according to question
andy would have been 3 times the age of mike
so,
3(3x-7)=5x+7
9x-21=5x+7
4x=28
x=7
so present age of andy =5x= 5×7=35years
that of mike =3x = 3×7=21 years.
hope it helps

Given:

The present ages of Andy and Mikeare in the ratio 5:3. If Andy had been 7 years older and Mike 7 year younger, the age of Andy would have been 3 times the age of Mike.

To Find:

Find their present ages.

Solution:

Let present age of andy = 5x

Let present age of mike = 3x

So,

After 7 years, age of andy = 5x + 7

Before 7 years, age of mike = 3x - 7

According to the question,

5x + 7 = 3(3x - 7)

5x + 7 = 9x - 21

7 + 21 = 9x - 5x

4x = 28

x = 7

Therefore,

Andy's present age = 5x = 5(7) = 35

Mike's present age = 3x = 3(7) = 21

Hence, present ages of Andy and Mike are 35 years and 21 years respectively.
