The present ages of Ram, Rahim and Robert are
in proportion of 5:7:8. Six years ago, the sum of
their ages is 42. Find their present ages.​

  • Ram : Rahim : Robert = 5 : 7 : 8

Six years ago, the sum of their age was 42.

Let's assume, the present age of -

  • Ram = 5x years.
  • Rahim = 7x years.
  • Robert = 8x years.

6 years ago the age of -

  • Ram = (5x - 6) years.
  • Rahim = (7x - 6) years.
  • Robert = (8x - 6) years.

According to the question,

→ (5x - 6) + (7x - 6) + (8x - 6) = 42

→ 5x - 6 + 7x - 6 + 8x - 6 = 42

→ 5x + 7x + 8x - 6 - 6 - 6 = 42

→ 20x - 18 = 42

→ 20x = 42 + 18

→ 20x = 60

→ x = 60/20

→ x = 3

Hence, the present age of -

  • Ram = 5x = 15 years.
  • Rahim = 7x = 21 years.

  • Robert = 8x - 6

Now, according to the question:-

  • (5x - 6)+(7x - 6)+(8x - 6) = 42
  • 5x + 6x + 7x - 6 - 6 - 6 = 42
  • 20x - 18 = 42
  • 20x = 42 + 18
  • 20x = 60
  • x = 20/60
  • x = 3

Their present ages:-

  • Ram = 5x = 5 × 3 = 15
