=

4

9

=>32x+24=27x+54

=>5x=30

Required Answer :

  • The sum of the present ages of A and B = 8 years

Given :

  • Ratio of the present age of A and B = 1 : 3
  • The ratio of their ages after 6 years = 2 : 3

To find :

  • The sum of the present age of A and B

Solution :

Let us assume that :

  • Present age of A = 1x years
  • Present age of B = 3x years

Their ages after 6 years :

  • Age of A = x + 6 years
  • Age of B = 3x + 6 years

According to the question,

⇒ (x + 6)/(3x + 6) = 2/3

⇒ 3(x + 6) = 2(3x + 6)

⇒ 3x + 18 = 6x + 12

⇒ 3x - 6x = 12 - 18

⇒ - 3x = - 6

⇒ Cancelling the (-) sign :

⇒ 3x = 6

⇒ x = 6/3

⇒ x = 2

The value of x = 2

Substituting the value of 'x' in the assumed ages of A and B :

⇒ Present age of A = 1x

Present age of A = 2 years

⇒ Present age of B = 3x

⇒ Present age of B = 3(2)

Present age of B = 6 years

The sum of the present ages of A and B = 2 + 6 = 8 years
