The pressure of a gas is 750.0 torr when its volume is 400.0mL. Calculate the pressure (in atm) if the gas was allowed to expand to 600.0mL at constant temperature. (UNITS!!)

Question 4 options:

0.660 atm

1.48 atm

Given :

P_{1} = 750 torr

V_{1} = 400 mL

V_{2} = 600 mL

To Find :

The pressure (in atm) if the gas was allowed to expand to 600.0mL at constant temperature.

Solution :

We know,

At constant temperature, P_{1} V_{1} = P_{2} V_{2} (By Boyle's Law)

or,                           750 × 400  =  P_{2} × 600

or,                                          P_{2} = \frac{750 X 400}{600}

∴                                            P_{2} = 500 torr = 0.66 atm

Option (1) is correct.
