Rate of decrement=40%

Price after decrement=£96

Let the price before decrement be £X.

Equation: Price - 40% of the price = price after decrement

X - 40% of X = 96

X - 40/100 x X = 96

X - 2X/5 = 96. (taking LCM on LHS)

(5X-2X)/5 = 96

3X/5 = 96

X = 96x5/3

X = 160

Price of the bicycle before decrement was £160.
