Let the first price of the car = 100%

Price decreased by 16%

Now price is (100-16) = 84%

According to the question,

84% = £2400

so, 100%= 2400×100/84 = £2855.5

Answer:

let original price of car be x

then

according to equation

The price of a car was decreased by 16% to £2400

x - 16% of  x = 2400

\begin{gathered}x- \frac{16}{100}x = 2400\\\\\frac{100x - 16x}{100} = 2400 \\\\\frac{84x}{100}= 2400\\\\84x = 240000\\\\x = \frac{240000}{84}\\\\x = 2857.14\end{gathered}

x=240010084x=240084x=240000x=84240000x=2857.14

hence , The nearest price  of the car before the decrease is £ 2857
