Given :

The price of a cycle is reduced by 25 per cent. The new price is reduced by a further 20 per cent. The two reductions together are equal to a single reduction of......

A) 45% B) 40% C) 35% D) 32.5%

To find :

Single reduction of a cycle.

Solution :

Let the cost of the cycle is x before reduced price & the single reduction is y% if 2 reduction together are equal.

Case no 1 :

Reduction cost is _____

= x * 25 %

= x/4

Cost of cycle after reduction of 25% is _____

= x -x/4

= 3x/4

Again, cost of cycle further reduction of 20% is _____

= 3x/4 * 20

= 3x/20

After further reduction of 20% , the new cost of cycle is _____

= 3x/4 -3x/20

=3x/5

❖Case no 2 :

If single reduction is done then the cost of cycle is ____

x - x *y% =3x/5

x ( 1 - y/100) = 3x/5

100 - y = 60

y = 40 %

Hence, the correct option is B) 40%.
