Answer:

the cost of one pen is ₹12, and the cost of a pencil is ₹6.

Step-by-step explanation:

solution;

Let the cost of one pen be ₹x and cost of a pencil be ₹y.

According to the question ;

The cost of  pens and  pencils is ₹18

⇒ x + y = 18  ... (i)

One pen cost and 4 pencil  ₹36

x+4y=36

x=36-4y

Substituting the value of (ii), in (i) -

x+y=18

⇒36-4y+y =1 8

-3y=18-36

-3y=-18

y=6

⇒now, putting the value of y in equation (1)

x+y=18

x+6=18

x=18-6

x=12

Hence, the cost of one pen is ₹12, and the cost of a pencil is ₹6.

Answer:

x=12,y=6

method

Let the price of a pen =x

Let the price of a pencil =y

x+y=18 (1)

x+4y=36 (2)

(1)-(2)gives (x+y=18)-(x+4y=36)=-3y=-18

=y=6

using the value of y in (1)

x+4*6=36

x+24=36

x=36-24

x=12

price of a pen =12

price of a pencil =6
