let the value was 100

since it depreciates by 2% each year.

so after 3 years it's value will be

 = 100 {( \frac{100 - 2}{100} )}^{3}  \\  = 100 {( \frac{98}{100}) }^{3}  \\  =  \frac{100 \times 941192}{1000000} \\  =  \frac{1 \times 941192}{10000}  \\  = 94.12

if it's present value is 100, then it's old value was 94.12

if it's present value is 1, then it's old value was 100/94.12.

if it's present value is 12000, then it's old value is

  = \frac{100}{94.12}  \times 1200 \\  =  \frac{100 \times 1200}{94.12}  \\ = 1274.96 \\  = 1275
