Let the price of sugar be 100/- per kg and the family uses 1 kg sugar
40% increase= 140/- per kg
At 100/-rate 1 kg sugar was available
now at 140/- rate 1 kg sugar is available
Therefore at current rate 100/140kg is available by spending 100/-= 5/7kg
5/7 kg= 714gms
Therefore consumption reduction is 1000gms(1kg)-714gms=286 gms
Therefore % reduction= 286/1000*100=28.6%
