Given:
Decrease in price is 20%
The Family can buy 20 kg more for Rs. 400.
Calculation:
Let the initial price of sugar be x Rs./kg
Let the initial weight of sugar be y kg
When the price of sugar decreases by 20%, the new price
⇒ [(100 – 20)/100] × x = 0.8x Rs./kg
Similarly, the increased amount of purchased sugar
⇒ (y + 20) kg
So, we get the relation for money spent in purchase as:
⇒ xy = 400 ----(i)
Similarly,
⇒ 0.8x × (y + 20) = 400
⇒ 0.8xy + 16x = 400
⇒ (0.8 × 400) + 16x = 400
⇒ x = 5
The final price of sugar
⇒ 0.8 × 5 = 4 Rs./kg
∴ The final price of the sugar is Rs. 4 per kg
