As the price of the stone varies with square of weight, there must be a constant part of price.
Let that constant part of price = Rs. X
So 2² × X = 40000
⇒ X = 10000

That stone of 2 kg weight breaks into two pieces on falling in the ratio 3 : 2
∴ weight of those pieces separately now = 1.2 kg & 0.8 kg
So, price of bigger piece = (1.2)² × X = 1.44 × 10000 = 14400
& the price of the smaller one = (0.8)² × X = 0.64 × 10000 = 6400

∴ Loss = 40000 - (14400 + 6400) = 19200.
