Answer- CHROMATOGRAPHY:-

Definition- The process to separate the coloured components of a mixture is called chromatography.

Principle- 1. The components should be coloured.

2. These coloured solutes should be soluble in the same solvent.

3. One of the components should be more soluble in water.

Applications- 1. Separating pigments from their natural colours.

2. Separating drugs from blood.

Answer:

  • Paper chromatography is a type of partition chromatography, which is based on continuous differential partitioning of components of a mixture between a stationary phase and a mobile phase.
  • A special quality paper (called chromatography paper) is used as the adsorbent column or a statis phase. The paper contains water trapped in it. The paper is suspended in a suitable solvent which is the mobile phase.
  • The solvent rises up the paper and flows over the spot due to capillary action.
  • The paper selectively retains different components according to their differing partition in two phases.
  • The paper strip so developed is called chromatogram.
