"The problem of untouchability in India is due to the caste system.

The people belonging to the upper castes of the society namely the Brahmins considered those belonging to the lower strata of the society, say Dalits, untouchables and isolated them as a separate community.

In terms of profession too, people were considered untouchables like sweepers, manual scavengers, washermen etc and are looked down by the society.
