The problem that is faced by the farmers of Telangana due to over-reliance on wells for irrigation are -

  • The cost of irrigation using borewells is very high creating a hole in the pocket of farmers.
  • The groundwater level is decreasing rapidly which will cause water shortage and eventually it will not be available to farmers.
  • Furthermore, it has promoted inequity between well-owners and non-well-owners.
  • The quality of groundwater has been degrading due to pollution caused by urbanization, this will in turn deteriorate the quality of the crops.
  • In addition, these areas receive saline and alkaline water which is not fit for irrigation.
