The process by which water enters root due to diffusion is termed as passive absorption because it takes place without expenditure of energy. The water molecules move from higher concentration to the lower concentration which is towards the gradient. It takes place by two methods facilitated diffusion and simple diffusion. 

In facilitated diffusion, the ions like sodium, glucose and potassium passes using carrier proteins through the cell membrane without energy along the concentration gradient. In diffusion, the ions or molecules randomly diffuses along the concentration gradient.
