There are two processes involved in coal formation, namely peatification and coalification.

Peatification:-

The process of partial decomposition of plant material to broken down organic material called peat in swampy, waterlogged environment is called peatification. This process is carried out by bacteria.

Coalification:-

Coalification is the process when peat is subjected to intense heat and pressure, it changes from complex biological and molecular structures in the cells of plants to chemical fragments seen in coal.
