A method of converting starch containing industrial waste streams to glucose and then to lactic acid is disclosed.

Glucoamylase is then added to convert more than 90 % of the starch to glucose substantially free of microbial activity. The glucose containing hydrolysate is then converted to lactic acid by fermentation.
