Question:

The process of digestion starts from the ___ .

Answer:

The process of digestion starts from the mouth.

A Little Explanation On Digestion:

Digestion is the secondary process of nutrition in human beings. It is the process of breaking down complex food molecules with the simpler molecules and is brought about with the help of special molecules called enzymes. Enzymes break down food particles into simpler molecules through chemical reactions. In complex higher organisms like frog and man, there are special organs for the digestion of food. The food passes through the alimentary canal. Here several digestive enzymes are secreted. These enzymes break the complex food materials into simpler ones. Digestion is, thus, extracellular.

Digestive System In Humans: Our body cells cannot use the food in the form it is eaten by us. The food is converted into a simpler form. The process of digestion starts in the mouth. From the mouth, the food passes through a food canal(called alimentary canal or digestive tract). Alimentary canal is a long, muscular and coiled tube. It starts from the mouth and ends at the anus.

The different organs of the alimentary canal are as follows-

  1. Mouth and mouth cavity (or buccal cavity).
  2. Oesophagus (gullet or food pipe).
  3. Stomach.
  4. Small Intestine.
  5. Large Intestine.
  6. Rectum.
  7. Anus.

Associated with the alimentary canal are some glands that secrete digestive juices. These glands are-

  1. Salivary glands.
  2. Liver.
  3. Pancreas.

The alimentary canal along with the associated glands is called the digestive system.
