The process of digging out minerals from inside the earth is called MINING.

There are mainly two kinds of mining done throughout the world to extract minerals, ore, crystals etc. These two are:

Open cast Mining:

  • These kinds of mining are done in an open area. Heavy machinery is used to load and unload the minerals.
  • Usually in these areas ores lie at shallow depths beneath the surface of the earth.
  • Overhead costs such as safety precautions and equipment is relatively low.
  • The output is both large and rapid.

Shaft Mining:

  • It is also called Underground mining.
  • Vertical shafts have to be sunk to reach the minerals
  • This kind of mining is usually done where the minerals are very deep in the crust.
  • It is costly as it requires specially designed lifts, drills.
  • And also special care is taken of the people and movement of materials.
