It does not take place in the presence of oxygen as nitrogen in the form of nitrates is found in the soil . The nitrogen fixing bacteria such as rhizobium absorb the nitrogen from the air and convert it into nitrates which is then supplied to the plant body. Also it takes nitrogen from the soil and supplies to the plants.
