The Process of seperation of light into its component colours while passing
through a medium is called the dispersion of light.
Sir Issac Newton was the first person to use a glass prism to obtain Sun's
spectrum. When white light is incident on the Prism, different colours bend
through different angles. Among the seven colours, red bends the least while
Violet bends the most. Thus, as shown in figure, the seven colours emerge along
different paths and get separated and we get a spectrum of seven colours.
What do you mean by dispersion of light?
ii) Name the different colours of light?
iii) Who discovered first Sun's spectrum. When white light is incident on the
prism ?
iv) What is a prism ?
v) Why do we get a spectrum of seven colours when white light is dispersed
by a prism?

Answer:

When white light is passed through a glass prism it splits into its spectrum of colours (in order violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red) and this process of white light splitting into its constituent colours is termed as dispersion.

ii.The primary colours of light are red, green and blue. Mixing these colours in different proportions can make all the colours of the light we see. This is how TV and computer screens work. If you look at a screen with a magnifying glass you will be able to see that only these three colours are being used.

iii.Isaac Newton

iv.a solid geometric figure whose two ends are similar, equal, and parallel rectilinear figures, and whose sides are parallelograms

v .When white light is incident on a prism, the rays corresponding to different colours bend through different angles on refraction . Of the various colours in the visible region, red light bends the least and violet light bends the most. ... Hence, we get a spectrum of seven colours.

Question

iv) What is a prism ?

Answer- Prism, in optics, piece of glass or other transparent material cut with precise angles and plane faces, useful for analyzing and reflecting light. ... An ordinary triangular prism can separate white light into its constituent colours, called a spectrum.

Question

v) Why do we get a spectrum of seven colours when white light is dispersedby a prism?

Answer- The basic reason behind the dispersion of white light into seven different colours is because all the seven rays of light of different colours travel at different speeds through the glass prism..
