Modulation is the process of superimposing signal into carrier wave. In this process the signal (or the message signal that is usually of a low frequency) that has to be transferred from one place to other is imposed on a periodic wave that is usually of higher frequency known as the carrier wave. So that the message signal is also pulled up to a higher frequency to be transferred and then it is separated from this signal once it reaches destination.
