The final product formed upon reaction of silica with HCl is - Fumed silica.
Silica is allowed to react with HCl by using technologies like carbon black production in the manufacture of fumed silica which is released as fumes or smoke.
Silica (SiO₂) is allowed to react with dry gaseous HCl, which forms Silicon tetrachloride.
SiO₂ + 4HCl → SiCl₄ + 2H₂O
These products are then fed into the reactor's burner tube along with hydrogen and air.
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
SiCl₄ + 2H₂O → SiO₂ + 4HCl.
The HCl released is recycled and fumed silica is obtained as smoke.
