The product of ages of Harish and seema is 240.If twice the age of Seema is more than Harish's age by 4 years, what is Seema's age in years

Let Seema's age be x .
There fore , Harish's age is = 2x - 4 .

Now , it is given that the product of their ages is 240 .

So ,
Acc. to the question ,
x ( 2x - 4 ) = 240
=> 2x² - 4x = 240
=> x² -2x = 120
=> x² - 2x - 120 = 0
=> x² - 12x + 10x - 120 = 0
=> x ( x - 12 ) + 10 ( x - 12 ) = 0
=> ( x + 10 ) ( x - 12 ) = 0

So , x is either -10 or 12 .

Now , age of a person can not be negative , so x is 12.

There fore , age of Seema is 12 yrs . [ Answer ] .
