Concept

Age of two different peoples can be expressed as linear equations in two variables. This allows us to understand the relation between the variables.

Given

The product of Arun's age (in years) two years ago and his age three years from now is three less than thrice his present age.

Find

The present age of Arun

Solution

let the present age of Arun be 'x'.

The arun's age two years ago will be x-2

Three years from noe it will be x+3

By the given conditions

(x-2)(x-3) = 3x-3

x^2-2x-3=3x-3

x^2-2x-3=0

x(x-3) 1(x-3)=0

(x+1)(x-3)=0

here either x+1 =0 or x-3 =0

x=-1 is an unacceptable value.

x= 3 is acceptable value.

Therefore the present age of Arun is 3 years.
