N × 50 = constant

or, N × 50 = k

or, k = 50N

Now if 10 more people are added then

(N+10) × 40 = k

or, 40N+400 = 50N

or, 10N = 400

or, N= 400/10 = 40

Therefore, the number of people that went to picnic is 40
