The product of Ramu's age (in years) five years ago and his age (in years) nine years later is 15. Determine Ramu's present age.

SOLUTION :  

Let Ramu’s present age be x years.

Five years ago Ramu’s age = (x - 5)years

Nine years later Ramu’s age = (x + 9) years

(x - 5)(x + 9) = 15

x² - 5x + 9x - 45 = 15

x² + 4x - 45 - 15 = 0

x² + 4x - 60 = 0

x² + 10x- 6x - 60 = 0

[By middle term splitting]

x(x + 10) - 6 (x + 10) = 0

(x - 6)(x + 10) = 0

(x - 6) = 0  or  (x + 10) = 0

x = 6  or  x = - 10

Since, age can't be negative ,x ≠ - 10 , so x = 6  

Hence, Ramu's present age is 6 years .
