the product of the ages of harish and seema is 240 .if twice the age of seema is more than harish age by 4 yrs .what is seema age in yrs.

Let the Seema age and Harish age be x yrs and y yrs respectively.

xy = 240

x = 240/y ............(1)

Also,

2y = x + 4

x - 2y = -4

240/y - 2y = -4. (using eq(1))

 \frac{240 - {2y}^{2} }{y} = -4 \\ \\ 240 - {2y}^{2} = - 4y \\ \\ 120 - {y}^{2} = - 2y \\ \\ {y}^{2} - 2y - 120 = 0 \\ \\ {y}^{2} - 12y + 10y - 120 = 0 \\ \\ y(y - 12) + 10(y - 12) = 0 \\ \\ (y + 10)(y - 12) = 0 \\ \\ y + 10 = 0 \: and \: y - 12 = 0 \\ \\ y = - 10 \: and \: y = 12 \\ \\

Here, age can't be negative , So

y = 12

xy = 240

12 × x = 240

x = 20

Hence,

Seema age = 20 yrs

Harish age = 12 yrs.
